India's Top 25 entrance tests for Engineering, MBA admissions

ENGINEERING
AMRITA ENGINEERING ENTRANCE (AEE)

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham conducts its Engineering Entrance Examination every year on an all India basis for admission to the 4-year B.Tech Degree programmes with 1240 seats offered in the 3 campuses at Amritapuri (Kollam), Bengaluru and Ettimadai (Coimbatore).

The cost of the form is Rs. 850 and it can be obtained from the college, designated branches of AXIS bank or it can be filled online.

Eligibility: A pass in the final examination of 10+2 (Class 12) or its equivalent securing 60% marks aggregate in PCM.

Test Pattern & Selection: There will be only one question paper of 3 hours duration containing 120 objective type questions in Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry. Each question carries 3 marks. Negative mark will be awarded for each wrong answer. Candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria will be admitted to the first year of the B.Tech programmes through counselling, based on their ranks in the entrance examination.

AIEEE (ALL INDIA ENGINEERING ENTRANCE EXAM)

AIEEE conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is the most popular engineering Entrance examination for BE/ B.Tech aspirants across the country. Last year more than 10 lakh students appeared for AIEEE to get admission in the various reputed NIT’s and State-level institutes which have around 27,000 seats. The cost of the form is Rs. 500 and it can be obtained from the designated branches of Syndicate bank, CBSE Regional Offices or can be filled online. Colleges which accept AIEEE scores include Delhi Technological University (DTU), PEC University, BIT Mesra, School of Planning & Architecture, SASTRA and many other deemed universities.

Eligibility: Candidate must have passed in final examination of 10+2 (Class 12) or its equivalent with 50% marks.

Test Pattern & Selection:

AIEEE is of 3 hours having objective questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with equal weightage given to each subject. Each question has four options.There is a negative marking of 1/4th marks for incorrect answers.

Upon declaration of result score card indicating All India Rank and State Rank with total marks and marks in each subject shall be sent to all candidates appearing in AIEEE. Candidates scoring above a certain cut off percentage of marks to be called for counselling.

BITSAT (BIRLA INSTITUTE TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE ADMISSION TEST)

BITSAT is conducted for admission to Birla Institute of Technology and Science for Bachelor’s in Engineering programs in its Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa campuses. Last year more than one and half lakh students appeared for BITSAT. It opens access to more than 2500 seats in the various BITS campuses. Candidates can register for BITSAT by applying online. The completed application form along with the fees of Rs. 1500/- (Rs. 1000/- for female candidates) has to be sent to BITS, Pilani.

Eligibility Candidates need to pass 12th with at least 80% marks in aggregate in PCM with a minimum of 60% marks in each (PCM).

Test Pattern & Selection BITSAT is a 3-hour online test and has 150 objective questions with each having four options. For a correct answer a candidate gets 3 marks and for an incorrect answer 1 mark is deducted. The distribution of 150 questions is as followed: Physics (40), Chemistry(40), English Proficiency (15), Logical Reasoning (10), and Mathematics (45). Admissions will be made purely on merit. The merit position of the candidate for admission will be based on the score obtained by the candidate.

BVPEEE (BHARTIYA VIDYAPEETH ENGINEERING ENTRANCE EXAM)

Bhartiya Vidyapeeth University is amongst the most famous institutes for engineering education in India. Every year a large number of students appear for BVPEEE for admission to B.Tech course (700 seats) in Bhartiya Vidyapeeth University, Pune. The information brochure & application form is available at a cost of Rs. 1,000.

Eligibility: A candidate should have Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with English in class 12th with an aggregate of at least 50% in PCM.

Test Pattern & Selection: The entrance exam will have 200 objective questions from Maths and Physics with each subject having 100 questions. There is no negative marking and the questions are from class 11th and 12th Syllabus. The eligible candidates, chosen on the basis of rank in BVPEEE, would be called for counselling for final admission.

COMEDK UGET (CONSORTIUM OF MEDICAL, ENGINEERING AND DENTAL COLLEGES OF KARNATAKA)

COMEDK UGET (Under Graduate Entrance Test) is for admission to undergraduate courses (MBBS, BDS, BE, B.Arch) in private medical and engineering colleges in the State of Karnataka. The seat sharing arrangement with the Government of Karnataka has not been declared till yet. The cost of the form depends on the subject combination opted for: Rs 700/- for 3 subjects (PCM or PCB) and Rs 900/- for all 4 subjects (PCMB).

Eligibility Applicants should have passed the 2nd PUC/ Class 12 or equivalent examination.

Test Pattern & Selection: A single test combining Physics and Chemistry with a total of 120 questions: 60 questions in Physics and 60 questions in Chemistry. The test duration for combined paper is 120 minutes. A separate test for Mathematics and Biology will be held on the same day with each subject having 60 questions with a duration of 60 minutes. There is no negative marking for this exam.

Upon declaration of results, the test scores will be published online and the rank list will be followed by centralized counselling. A single window systemis followed for admission process.


IIT-JEE (INDIAN INSTIUTE OF TECHNOLOGY JOINT ENTRANCE EXAM)

The Indian Institutes of Technology (popularly known as IITs) are institutions of national importance established through an Act of Parliament for fostering excellence in education. There are 15 IITs at present which have around 9,000 seats including ISM Dhanbad & IISER. The admissions to the Undergraduate Programmes at these institutions for all Indian and Foreign nationals are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The cost of the entrance test is Rs. 900 for online application and Rs. 1,000 for offline application.

Eligibility Candidates must secure at least 60% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination.

Test Pattern & Selection The IIT-JEE exam is considered to the toughest engineering entrance in the country. The JEE has two question papers, each of three hours duration. Both the question papers would consist of three separate sections on Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Questions in these papers will be of objective type and incorrect answers will be awarded negative marks. Based on the Minimum Qualifying Marks for Ranking (MQMR) in the individual subjects as well as the aggregate marks in the examination, a Common Merit List (CML) will be prepared without any relaxed criteria. Candidates will be allotted seats based on their ranking in the merit list.

ISAT (IIST ALL INDIA ADMISSION TEST)

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, was set up under the Department of Space, Government of India in 2007 and is Asia’s first Space Institute and the first in the world to offer the complete range of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral programmes with specific focus on space science, technology and applications. Admissions to the undergraduate programmes (B.Tech.) at IIST are made through an All India Admission Test (ISAT). The cost of the information brochure and application form is Rs. 600. The total number of seats for the undergraduate programmes in IIST for the year 2011 is 156.

Eligibility: Candidates must have secured at least 70% marks in the aggregate in their Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics papers in their QE & 70 % in class 10th also.

Test Pattern & Selection: The question paper is of objective type and consists of three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Admission to the undergraduate programme in IIST will be from the rank list prepared separately for GEN, SC, ST, PD and OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates, based on the performance in ISAT- 2011. The eligible candidates would be called for counseling for final admission.

KEE (KARUNYA UNIVERSITY ENGINEERING ENTRANCE)

Karunya University was founded in 1986 as Karunya Institute of Technology. In 2004 it became a deemed to be university and was subsequently renamed as Karunya University. KEE is held for admission to around 1400 B.Tech seats. The cost of the application is Rs. 750.

Eligibility A candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 60% aggregate in PCM and a minimum of 60% in Mathematics individually.

Test Pattern & Selection

The entrance examination is of 2 ½ hours consisting of objective type questions from PCM syllabus of class 11th and 12th. After declaration of result the Karunya Single Window Counselling is held at Karunya University and the seats will be filled based on the Karunya Entrance Examination Rank and the availability of seats.

KIITEE (KALINGA INSTITUTE OF INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING ENTRANCE)

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Training started its journey as a small industrial training institute in the year 1992 and has grown to be one of the largest universities in India with a strength of 15,500 students. KIITEE is held anually for admission to B.Tech Regular and Lateral Entry Courses. There is no application/ examination fee for KIITEE – 2011.

Eligibility:A candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with at least 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Test Pattern & Selection:

The paper is of 3 hours duration consisting of 120 multiple choice questions from the following subjects: Physics-40 questions, Chemistry-40 questions, Mathematics-40 questions. Those who qualify the written test are called for counselling.

MHT CET (MAHARASHTA COMMON ENTRANCE TEST)

MHT-Engg-CET is conducted by Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra for admission to all private, Government, aided & unaided engineering universities/ colleges in Maharashtra for Undergraduate Engineering courses. Through MHT-CET the candidates can get admission to Engineering courses of 10 universities and their affiliated colleges. The application form is available for Rs. 700.

EligibilityA candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with English, Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics with atleast 50% aggregate marks in PCM.

Test Pattern & Selection The entrance examination for engineering entrance is of 3 hours duration and consists of two papers of 1 ½ hour each: 1. Physics & Chemistry (50+50 marks), 2. Mathematics (100 marks). All the questions will be objective type with 4 options each. There will be no negative marking. The list of candidates to be called for counseling/seat allotment based on rank will be published on the website of DTE.

SRMEEE (SRM ENGINEERING ENTRANCE EXAM)

SRM University is one of the top ranking universities in India with over 20,000 students and 1,500 faculty, offering a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. SRMEEE is conducted each year for admission to its B.Tech course. Its application form is available for Rs. 750. SRM University has almost 5000 seats available for engineering aspirants.

Eligibility: Candidates should have scored at least 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathemetics in class 12th.

Test Pattern & Selection:The paper is of 2 ½ hours and consists of objective questions from the following subjects: Physics-35 questions for a total of 105 marks, Chemistry-35 questions for a total of 105 marks, Mathematics-35 questions for a total of 105 marks, Biology-50 questions for a total of 105 marks. There will be negative marking of 1/3rd of the total marks allotted to each question for an incorrect answer.

UPTU SEE (UTTAR PRADESH TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY STATE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION)

UPTU was established in the year 2000 by government of Uttar Pradesh and is one of the largest technical universities in India. UPTU SEE is held annually for admission into a number of technical courses like engineering, management, fashion & design, architecture, pharmacy & hotel management in private unaided/government aided colleges in Uttar Pradesh affiliated to Uttar Pradesh Technical University.

Eligibility A candidate should have cleared class 12th exams with Physics and Maths and any one of the following subjects: Chemistry, Bio-Technology, Computer Science or Biology.

Test Pattern & Selection There will be 2 papers for B.Tech entrance: Paper 1: Physics & Chemistry-150 minutes & 75 questions each from Physics & Chemistry and paper 2: Mathematics-90 minutes & 90 questions. There is no negative marking for marking an incorrect response. A final merit list for counselling is prepared based on the result of the examination and candidates are called in batches for centralized counseling.

VITEEE (VIT ENGINEERING ENTRANCE EXAM)

VIT was founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College. In 2001 it was accorded the status of a university by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). VITEEE form is available for Rs. 750 and is held for admission to Bachelor’s courses in Engineering in Vellore Institute of Technology. Last year about 138,000 candidates appeared for VITEEE for admission to around 2100 seats.

Eligibility: A candidate should have passed class 12th examination with a minimum aggregate of 60% in PCM.

Test Pattern & Selection: VITEEE is of 2 ½ hours duration and has 150 objective type questions from class 12th syllabus of Physics, Chemistry and Maths and or Biology. One can either appear for Biology or Mathematics or for both. There is no negative marking in the examination. Successful candidates are called for counselling in batches and allotment of branches is on the basis of the rank in VITEEE.

AIMA-MAT (MANAGEMENT APTITUDE TEST)

Management Aptitude Test or MAT as it is popularly known is conducted 4 times a year (in February, May, September & December) by the Centre for Management Services (CMS) division of All India Management Association (AIMA). It is as a credible, comprehensive and single window test for admissions to different postgraduate management programmes. The application form for MAT is available for Rs. 1050.

Eligibility: Graduate in any discipline from a recognized university. Final year degree course students can also apply.

Test Pattern & Selection: MAT has two formats: Offline test or Computer based test both of 2 ½ hours. Candidates can opt for either one of these based on their convenience. There are five papers in MAT: Paper 1: Language Comprehension, Paper 2: Mathematical Skills, Paper 3: Data Analysis, Paper 4: Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, Paper 5: Indian & Global Environment Section, each comprising of 40 questions for a total of 200 Questions.

The MAT score tells you the relative position of the candidate with respect to the other candidates (percentile), there is no final percentile in MAT, instead a final composite score is given. Candidates can use this score to apply to various management institutes which accept MAT scores.

ATMA - AIMS TEST FOR MANAGEMENT ADMISSIONS

ATMA has been approved by the Ministry of HRD of the Government of India for admission on All India basis to the MBA/PGDM and other postgraduate programmes like MCA. Around 140 MBAinstitutes accept ATMA scores for admission to various management programs. The application form for ATMA is available for Rs. 950

Eligibility: Candidate must have completed their graduation from a recognized and authorized university.

Test Pattern & Selection: ATMA 2011 test contains 170 Questions spread over six sections comprising Analytical, Verbal and Logical Reasoning. Each section is timed separately. Total time of the test is 3 hours. A candidate has to undergo the selection process of the institute to qualify for the admission to the PG programmes of the institute after declaration of the result of ATMA.

CAT (COMMON ADMISSION TEST)

Common Admission Test (CAT) is the most popular MBA entrance test and is held annually for admission to postgraduate management courses in all the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) and various other management institutes. IIMs offer around 2700 seats in various management programmes & other than the IIMs, 165-odd institutes admit students based on CAT scores. Every year more than two lakh students appear for CAT. The application form and information bulletin is available for Rs. 1400.

Eligibility: A candidate should have atleast 50% or equivalent CGPA in Graduation.

Test Pattern & Selection: Since 2009 CAT is a computer based test of 2 ½ hours. CAT has multiple choice questions from the following sections: Data Interpretation and logical Reasoning, Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Comprehension. Candidates are expected to perform well in all the three sections as there are separate cut-offs for individual sections as well. Each correct answer will be awarded 1 or 2 marks & for each wrong answer, 1/3rd mark will be deducted.

CAT website will list the names of the candidates shortlisted for interviews by IIMs for PGP. Each IIM will send interview letters to the candidates it has shortlisted. The criteria for shortlisting vary from IIM to IIM. Other management colleges have different cutoffs for various courses. Candidates can apply to the colleges individually with the CAT score and then convert the call by going through a rigorous round of group discussion and personal interview.

IBSAT (IBS APTITUDE TEST)

IBSAT is an aptitude test conducted by the Federation of Universities (FedUni), for students seeking admission into the management programmes. The application form is available for Rs. 1200 and the test is held all across India in about 100 centres in various cities.

Eligibility: Graduates (any discipline) in English medium with 50% and above aggregate marks.

Test Pattern & Selection: IBSAT is for 2 hours duration and is aimed to test the applicants’ ability in quantitative techniques, data interpretation, data adequacy, vocabulary, analytical reasoning and reading comprehension. The results of the IBSAT are hosted online on www.ibsat.org. The details of the score (in terms of percentiles) obtained in the test is intimated to all applicants.

ICET (INTEGRATED COMMON ENTRANCE TEST)

The Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET) is the common entrance examination for admissions to Master of Computer Application (MCA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) by Universities in Andhra Pradesh. ICET is conducted by any one University in Andhra Pradesh. ICET 2010 was conducted by Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. The application form is available for Rs. 250.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s Degree Examination of not less than 3 years duration in any discipline with Mathematics at 10+2 level.

Test Pattern & Selection: The test is of 2 ½ hours duration and consists of 200 questions of 1 mark each in the following topics: Analytical, Mathematical & Communication Ability. The qualifying percentage of marks in the Entrance Test is 25% (i.e. 50 marks out of total 200 marks)

FMS (FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES)

FMS is one of the premier management institutions in India which conducts its own Entrance Test. The application form is available for Rs. 750.

Eligibility: 3-year Bachelor’s programme with an aggregate of minimum 50%.

Test Pattern & Selection: There is no prescribed syllabus or format for this multiple-choice test which has 200 questions to be attempted in 120 minutes. So the most important factor in FMS entrance is speed & accuracy. The tests usually comprise the ollowing basic areas: Quantitative, Verbal, Analytical & Logical Reasoning. Students will receive both total percentile rank and sectional percentile rank scores in FMS. To be shortlisted students should have atleast 50th percentile rank score in each section of the test in FMS results.

IIFT (INDIAN INSTITUTE OF FOREIGN TRADE)

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) was set up in 1963 by the Government of India as an autonomous organisation to help professionalize the country’s foreign trade management. Today it is one of India’s most prestigious business schools. Last year approximately 63,000 candidates applied for just 180 seats. The cost of the application form is Rs. 1500.

Eligibility: Recognized Bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline.

Test Pattern & Selection: The entrance examination is of 2 hours having objective questions from the following sections: 1. English Comprehension, 2. Logical Reasoning, 3. Quantitative Analysis, 4. General Knowledge & Awareness. The candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their scores in the entrance examination. The shortlisted candidates will be called for Group Discussion, Interview and Essay Writing for final selection.

JOINT MANAGEMENT ENTRANCE TEST [JMET]

Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) is the first step in the process of admission to the 2 year full-time PG degree programmes in Management offered by the IITs. Currently IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee offer programmes in Management. The application form is available for Rs. 750.

Eligibility: Candidates with Bachelor’s degree in any discipline of Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree with first class or equivalent in any discipline from a recognized Institute/University with at least 60% marks

Test Pattern & Selection: The test is of 3 hours duration and consists of 120 questions (objective/multiple choice type) in the following sections: Verbal Communication, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation. The results of JMET provide a basis to each participating institute to shortlist potential candidates for conducting its own selection processes like, Group Discussion/Interview etc for the final admission.

MAH - MBA/MMS CET (MAHARASHTRA MBA COMMON ENTRANCE TEST)

Maharashtra – MBA/ MMS - Common Entrance Test (MAH MBA/MMS CET) is conducted by DTE, Maharashtra for admission to postgraduation management degree MBA/MMS and PGDBM/PGDM courses in Government, University Managed and Unaided institutes of Maharashtra. The application form is available for Rs. 1150.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree of minimum three years duration with minimum of 50% marks.

Test Pattern & Selection: The Entrance exam will be of 150 minutes duration consisting of 200 objective type questions. Questions will be from the following topics: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Aptitude and Logical/Abstract Reasoning. There is no negative marking in the examination. The cut-off mark in MAH-MBA/MMS-CET 2011 is 30 marks out of 200. In case of All India CET the cut-off in the percentile in these CET is equivalent to percentile corresponding to 30 marks in MAH-MBA/MMS-CET 2011. Successful candidates are shortlisted for group discussion and personal interview.

NMAT (NARSEE MONJEE MAT)
NMIMS was established in 1981 by Narsee Monjee Educational Trust. It was awarded ‘deemed to be university’ status by the UGC in 2003. NMAT is conducted by Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai for admission to various specialised courses in MBA. The application form is available for Rs. 1650.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s Degree (10+2+3) in any discipline from a recognized University with a minimum 50% marks.

Test Pattern & Selection: The NMAT is a computer based test of 2 hours duration consisting of multiple-choice questions where the candidate needs to select one of the correct answers. The sections in the NMAT-2011 are Language Skills; Quantitative Skills, Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency; and Logical Reasoning. The final merit list will be prepared on the basis of the NMAT Score, Written Test marks (as applicable), Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Presentation (as applicable) and work experience. The selection will be based on merit.

SNAP (SYMBIOSIS NATIONAL APTITUDE TEST)

Symbiosis National Aptitude (SNAP) Test is a common written test for the admission to all the Post-Graduate Institutes of Symbiosis International University. Written test is mandatory for admission into any Postgraduate programme offered by the constituent institute of Symbiosis International University. The application form is available for Rs. 1550. Candidates will need to apply to the individual one or more Symbiosis colleges separately.

Eligibility: To apply for SNAP a candidate should be a gradudate with atleast 50% marks in graduation.

Test Pattern & Selection: SNAP Test is of 2 hours duration and is an objective test with each question having 4 responses. Candidate should choose an appropriate response. Each wrong answer attracts 25% negative marks. The four sections are: General English, Quantative Aptitude, General Awareness, Logical & Analytical Reasoning. Candidates from the first stage will be shortlisted on the basis of SNAP score for Group Discussions and thereafter they will appear if shortlisted for Personal Interviews.

XAT (XLRI)

For more than 60 years XLRI has been conducting admission test on all India level to select the most appropriate students for management education. There are more than 70 plus Management Institutes which use XAT scores for selecting students. There are 33 cities in which XAT exam is conducted. Test Pattern & Selection: XAT has three sections – 'Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VA)’, 'Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (QA)’ and 'Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making Ability (AR)’. The time given to attempt these three sections is 120 minutes. In addition, one is evaluated on an essay which one is supposed to write in the next 20 minutes after finishing these three sections. A common merit list is declared and a candidate may apply for a maximum of three programmes. Those who apply for multiple programmes may be called for multiple interviews and/or group discussions. And selection criterion and cut offs vary across different programmes.
